Meet the Maker: Fringe and Free

We’re excited to continue our Meet the Makers series with Nathalie from Fringe and Free! Her stunning plant hangers are truly one-of-a-kind and have us working on our green thumb to fill the hangers with live plants. And her macrame wall hangings are the perfect addition to any boho chic home. We can’t wait to introduce you to Nathalie and learn more about Fringe and Free!

Hi Nathalie! Thanks for telling us your story today! First, can you please tell everyone a little about yourself?

My name is Nathalie and I am a maker, wife, and mother.

2020 has been a tough year. Can you share something good that has come out of this time?

My business is one of the best things to come out of 2020. I’ve wanted to have a small business for a few years, but this is the year I went for it.

We’re so glad you did. We love what you do and so do the customers at Mosaic Makers Collective! What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I love the not so eloquent but real words of Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation when she said “Screw it. I’m gonna try to do it anyway.” I found myself in that headspace, where fear was starting to annoy me and I just didn’t want to keep taking fear’s advice. So instead of waiting for things to be perfect, I just jumped in and am figuring it out as I go.

Leslie Knope is one wise woman! Those are great words to banish fear. We’d love to learn more about your business. What do you make and how long have you been doing it?

Fringe and Free is a modern fiber art brand. I use macrame to primarily make plant hangers, wall hangings, and my signature coasters. I most enjoy making large wall hangings. I’m constantly searching for new ways to blend fiber with my love for warm, earthy, and minimal decor.

Your macrame art is gorgeous and so unique! What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my work is how flexible it is. I enjoy working and I enjoy being home with my boys. Some of my favorite moments are when I’m making a piece and my 3-year old is working with his train tracks on the floor next to me. It is also very special for me to make something with my hands, in my home, knowing it will soon go into another’s hands and home. It is quite intimate in that sense.

What a special way to do what you love while getting to spend time with your little one! Final question: What is your favorite restaurant in the Bishop Arts District?

The Oasis Plant Shop and the Salty Donut in Bishop Arts are wonderful.

Agreed! I recently tried an absolutely life-changing cookie dough-stuffed donut from Salty Donut. Thanks so much for sharing the story of Fringe and Free with us. We’re so glad to have you as part of the Mosaic Makers Collective!
