Are you as obsessed with home makeover shows as I am? I don’t even own a home, but I’m captivated by the stories of the families whose homes are transformed and I watch in disbelief as Chip and Joanna Gaines fix up a home until it’s hardly recognizable from the structure we first saw the new owners purchase at the start of the episode. The story of Mosaic Makers Collective’s transformation is one of those heart-warming 180s that’ll leave you wondering whether the current and former shops were actually in the same building.
Before Mosaic Makers Collective rented the space we occupy today, it was a lifestyle and clothing store with an atmosphere described as evoking “mood, voyage, cool seventies, and urban noir.” The vibe was dark, raw, and absolutely perfect for them. It was also totally different from the one we imagined for Mosaic Makers Collective.
Getting the keys
When we picked up the keys for the new space in February 2020, we walked into one dark garage– the epitome of an open floorplan! There were old doors along the back wall, big doorways, and we were stoked for all the floor space, which meant we could showcase more makers than our previous location. Founder and owner Katy knew she wanted to transform the space into a haven for creatives and shoppers alike. She wanted the space to be on-brand, bright, and happy – a light and airy open space where people could fully appreciate the amazing work of the makers whose work we feature!
Let the transformations begin
While we always love an open floor plan, we decided to add partition walls to give the artists their own space and add some dressing rooms.
We know that there’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to brighten up a room, so we covered the old charcoal-hued paint with light gray and white. And of course, we needed a pop of color, so we painted the columns pink.
To say this was a team effort is an understatement. We got thrifty with our furnishings and fixtures, sourcing them from Target, Amazon, IKEA, and some retail closings, like Charming Charlie and Kohl’s. The whole team came together to build (with IKEA products, the more hands, the better).
In addition to our fun finds, Danielle of Onderkast Studio, brought in our pièce de résistance– a working foil Heidelberg press that sits in the corner of the shop!
One last artsy touch before opening our doors
The weekend before our scheduled opening, Anna, of Demi and Olive, drove up from Austin to paint the gorgeous mural you’ll pass as you walk through our oversized barn doors into the shop.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a full year since we walked into that charcoal-hued garage, so full of potential. These days, it’s full of bright, handmade products, curious customers, and joyful makers.
