Today, we’re going behind the scenes with Jillian from Nest in Progress! Her dyed apparel and art pieces are one-of-a-kind and never fail to bring a smile to our faces. We can’t wait to dig a little deeper and learn about Jillian’s process and inspiration! Come on… We know you’re DYE-ing to go behind the scenes!
Thanks for taking us behind the scenes today, Jillian. Where do you find inspiration for your art?
I find inspiration for color combinations in art, interior design, nature, so many different places!
Inspiration really can be found everywhere! Do you plan for months before creating a new product, or do you create spontaneously?
If I have an idea for new colors to try I’ll work on them spontaneously. For bigger projects, like holiday products, I’ll plan and sketch and collect inspiration a few months in advance. That’s what I’m working on now!
Ooh! We can’t wait to see your holiday line! Can you please walk us through a step-by-step process for creating your product?
I use an ice dye method to create my products. There are a few different ways to do it, but I start with gathering my rinsed fabric and sprinkling powdered pigment dye over it. Then I cover it with a layer of ice and let it melt. As the ice melts it pulls the dye through the fabric, splitting the colors and creating one-of-a-kind patterns. No two pieces ever turn out the same which is what I love about it.
What a unique process that yields stunning results! What does a typical day look like for you?
By day I work as an HR Business Partner, so my creative projects happen in the evenings and on weekends. Sometimes my kids join me and dye their clothes too!
That’s a great way to get everyone involved in the creative process! Who’s the first person you show when you create a new piece?
Usually, it’s my kids that see my pieces as they are completed. They are very creative as well and are interested in seeing the final result.

For fall and holiday, I’m playing around with more painting on my dyed robes. I love how layers and touches of metallic paint elevate them into something even more special.
